Is Hayek American College an exchange program? How does it work?
It is not an exchange program; it is an international college with a 2+2 model, in partnership with top universities in the US. Students study for 2 years in Brasília, with classes 100% in English, and then continue their studies in the US for another 2 years to complete their bachelor's degree.
After transferring from Hayek, business majors will be able to finish their bachelor's in 2 years and computer science will take from 2-3 years, depending on the partner institution you transfer to.
What is the cost during the years in Brasília?
The monthly tuition fee is R$ 5,100, plus an additional cost of approximately R$ 500 per month for books. The application fee for the selection process is R$ 300.
And in the United States, how much will it cost?
The estimated cost in the United States depends on the institution chosen by the student. In the US, the cost is generally provided as yearly tuition instead of monthly fees.
Hayek's partner institutions offer financial advantages for our students, with the yearly tuition, already discounted, ranging from US$ 10,000 to US$ 18,000 (approximately R$ 55,000 to R$ 100,000). Additionally, there is an extra cost for housing and meals, which ranges from US$ 8,000 to US$ 12,000 (around R$ 44,600 to R$ 67,000) per year.
Converting this to a monthly cost, the total cost in the US is estimated between R$ 8,500 and R$ 14,000 per month.
Are there any discounts or scholarships?
All of our scholarship opportunities are merit-based, according to the results of the selection process. We also offer full scholarships through the government program Pro Uni. Opportunities will be announced through our news channel, Hayek Global Times.
Does this program also include exchange opportunities?
Yes, definitely! We have agreements for in-person exchanges with several colleges around the world, from Hawaii to South Korea. Additionally, in each course during the first two years in Brasília, there will be a virtual exchange (COIL), allowing you to have an international experience and build an incredibly diverse global network!
Where will I transfer to in the US after the first 2 years in Brasilia?
We hold 2+2 partnerships for majors in Business and Computer Science with several universities in the US which include: Alfred State University of Technology; Cumberland University; Fort Hays State University; and Kentucky State University.
What do I need to prepare for the admissions process for the institution in the US?
Our team will work in tune with the partner university’s admissions team to ensure a smooth transition to the US. As part of the process of obtaining a student Visa, you will be required to:
- Financial Statement which proves you have sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses.
- I-20 Form from the institution where you intend to transfer to
- Payment of the I-901 SEVIS FEE
- Secure health insurance coverage for the duration of your studies.
- Application to the F1 Student Visa
Can I stay to work in the US after graduation?
In the US, you can apply for an Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. For the Major in Business usually you can work for one year in the area of the Major. For STEM degrees, which includes Computer Science, you can apply for up to 3 years of OPT.
Will I have diplomas from the US and Brazil?
After concluding your studies at Hayek Global College in Brazil, you will receive a Tecnólogo Degree in HR which is already a terminal higher education degree in Brazil, which would enable you to join post-graduate programs in Brazil, for example. Then, after concluding your studies at the partner university you will receive a bachelor's degree valid in the US, in the field that you have chosen to major in.
I have credits from another college. Is it possible to transfer them?
Yes, it is possible! We will evaluate the subjects you have completed at the other college, and if they are similar to those we offer, we will grant you credits for the transfer. Transfer students must also go through the selection process.
I want to study medicine, law, veterinary science, or other courses outside of Business and IT. Is it possible?
The US higher education model is very flexible and allows for credit transfer in any area, even outside the courses we offer. While you may not be able to transfer all your credits, we can create a personalized path based on your desired field, so you only take the credits that will count toward your course in the US.
It is important to note that Medicine, Law, Veterinary Science, and Dentistry are considered "postgraduate" courses in the US. This means you will need to complete an undergraduate degree in a related area before entering one of these programs.
Is the course online or in-person?
The course requires students to be present in the classroom, with a maximum of 25% allowed absences. However, our professors teach online in real-time.
According to the Ministry of Education (MEC), since the professor is not physically present in the classroom, our course is considered distance learning (EAD), even though students have a 100% in-person experience.
This model allows us to bring the best professionals from around the world to our classroom in a decentralized way while maintaining the on-campus presence and experience for students. It’s the best of both worlds.
In addition to the international professor, we have two other professionals in every class: 1) a classroom coordinator, who is responsible for managing pedagogical activities with the professor, and 2) a technical support professional, who ensures that the technology runs smoothly during the class.
The quality of education in this international, decentralized, and student-focused model is far superior to the traditional model.
What is expected of me in the selection process?
We do not use the traditional Brazilian entrance exam model. We aim to measure students' holistic abilities and identify their potential beyond just "taking tests." Therefore, our selection process is divided into two phases.
In Phase 1, your proficiency in Math and English will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis.
In Phase 2, students will be ranked based on our evaluation of combined performance, which includes:
- High school transcripts
- Student portfolio
- 3-minute video pitch
- Simulated class activity
When does the academic year start, and what is the class schedule?
The academic year starts in February and August. During the first 2 years, we follow the typical Brazilian university calendar, with longer breaks in December and January.
What grading system is used in the course?
The grading system of the program is aligned with the American system: A, B, C, D, and F. We also calculate the overall grade average to determine the Grade Point Average (GPA).
Are there opportunities for internships or practical market experiences?
We maintain industry connections throughout the entire curriculum, preparing students for the job market and encouraging them to apply their skills in practice.
Each semester, students will also participate in a course called "Guided Aspiration Quest," which creates a personalized learning path for developing a market-relevant skill and applying it internationally. Hayek Global College will also facilitate extracurricular internships and practical experiences according to students' interests.
How does the admission process work for international students?
International students must go through the same selection process but also need to validate their high school diplomas. Here are some cases:
Non-residents of Brazil: must request the equivalence of their High School Academic Records at the Secretary of Education of the Federal District.
Diplomats: must request enrollment courtesy from CGPI (General Coordination for Planning and Exchange).
Refugees: must request recognition of their status from CONARE (National Committee for Refugees) and then request the equivalence of their High School Academic Records at the Secretary of Education of the Federal District.
